Social Media Marketing For Events Can Deliver Positive Results

2019 Billfish Classic Tournament

2019 Billfish Classic Tournament

We recently took on a new project with The Billfish Classic to help them with their social media before, during, and after the tournament. The Billfish Classic benefitting the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Coastal Plain’s mission is to provide a world class fishing tournament encouraging youth and family participation in the sport of fishing. When it comes to pushing out a message, particularly one with philanthropic associations and fishing related, it was a no brainer to turn to social media to really drive awareness, sponsorships, and publicity for The Billfish Classic.

Goals:

Prior to launching our efforts, we worked with The Billfish Tournament to determine their growth opportunities and develop clear, measurable goals and metrics to track performance. In these conversations and meetings, we came up with the following:

  • Increase awareness on social media
  • Increase website visits
  • Increase sponsors
  • Increase teams
  • Increase in followers through fun and engaging images, videos, and captions

Social Media

We focused on Facebook and Instagram as the two platforms to promote the 2019 Billfish Classic. The goal was to increase general awareness before, during, and immediately following the event. We wanted to grow social media followers as well as honor and promote sponsors to in turn grow the tournament.

Reaching the Right People

2019 Billfish Classic Tournament

The Billfish Classic is a four-day sport fishing tournament held in July in Beaufort, North Carolina. Being that this event is relatively niche, we knew we needed to be strategic in our efforts to not only reach a lot of people, but also reach the right people, which can be broken up into a few different categories. As we mentioned previously not only did we want to raise awareness of the event to bring in attendees, we also needed to attract boats and teams to enter the tournament. Finally, without our awesome sponsors we wouldn’t be able to have this wonderful tournament so it’s important to always attract more.

To do this, we researched relevant hashtags and included locations to reach people interested in topics related to the Billfish Tournament. We also developed a consistent content calendar that highlighted different aspects of the event showcasing fishing related items and content, featuring sponsors and giving them shout outs, as well as sharing photos and videos that would appeal to attendees and guests to encourage them to go to this year’s tournament. We shared thirty sponsor related posts alone, which allows potential sponsors to see that they not only will be giving back to a good cause and getting exposure at the actual event, but they will get valuable online exposure as well.

Through this strategic and targeted posting schedule, we were not only able to increase awareness of the event, we also drove notable double-digit percentage increases in social media followers on both Instagram and Facebook. These efforts also ended up driving additional website traffic and clicks. Overall, the event was a success and we look forward to seeing what The Billfish Tournament does in 2020.
