GDPR Compliance

GDPR Compliance

It is important to make sure your website is compliant with the guidelines of General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). The purpose of this legislation is to reinforce individuals’ rights pertaining to the collection, use, and storage of their personal data such as an individual’s name, home or email address, location data, and much more.

GDPR applies to any company, large or small, that collects and processes data belonging to anyone residing in the European Union. Companies outside of the EU will be required to comply with GDPR regulations if their website collects and processes personal information of any EU citizen.

Although GDPR was approved in May 2016, it will become enforced on May 25, 2018 and companies and businesses will need to make sure they are compliant with this new law or else they could face considerable fines.

There are different steps you can take to ensure that your company’s website is compliant with the guidelines of GDPR:

  • Understand the law
Knowing your responsibilities concerning GDPR is key when it comes to dealing with individuals’ personal data and how it is collected, processed and stored.
  • Audit the personal data collected by your business
You will need to assess and figure out what kind of personal information your company collects and see what is expected of your company if that information falls under the framework of GDPR.
  • Understand what information is regulated
If under the jurisdiction of GDPR, it is important to know who has access to, and who shares the data and also how that data is processed.
  • Review policies and procedures
It is important to evaluate the risks to private data and then review the policies and procedures in place regarding the protection of that data.
